Artist of The Week: Mariah Carey

As a remains of my OCPD days, I choose an artist on alphabetical order to grace my week, listening to their music and albums and watching their videos (if I find myself the time to actually do this). This past two weeks, though, belonged to an actual great artist that I can't seem to get tired of: Ms. Mariah Carey.

Mind you, I've been a huge fan of hers since the days of "Fantasy", a personal favorite of mine and a song that is still heavy on my iPod playlist. In fact, I think that part of the appeal of Mariah has always been that safe combination of corniness and sincerity both lyrically and musically. Let's be honest: who chooses to be compared to a butterfly and record a song and video which clearly didn't star any of those little creatures?

But that doesn't mean a thing when you got the talent and pipes of this woman. Let's be honest: at some point of the life, many artists tried very hard to be like her. Hell, even half of American Idol alumni have tried to emulate her, one way or the other. For an artist that has been in the game for about 23 years now, and had 18 number one hits, more than Elvis Presley and two behind The Beatles, which itself is a great accomplishment.

And let's not forget about the music, please. Since the first time I heard her with the aforementioned "Fantasy", I loved her lyrics, so saccharine and mellow but for good. The usage of big and unusual words for a pop singer ("nonchalant"? "persuade me to relinquish my love"? "despondency"?) (That last song, "Petals", is really a poem, about some personal issues, you should check that out) I really think she's underrated as a lyricist, but boy, those songs are amazing, and I actually blame her for teaching me so many big words to look OK among my peers in any given situations.

 

Her voice. Man, the source of much debate. She has stated so many times she is an alto, but really, who cares? Her voice is like the one of an angel. In her first period as a singer, she was very into melisma and other vocal acrobacies, but then she stopped and tried different approaches to her voice, although she didn't abandon her roots (case in point: "We Belong Together", another great, great song and personal favorite). Seriously though, how awesome is it? I long for the day I get to watch her live, and hear that glorious voice of her, and everything will be fine in life.

In the 90's, at the beggining of her career, Mariah seemed to found the perfect formula for success: strong, poppish, one-word first singles ("Fantasy", "Dreamlover", "Honey"), super powerful torch and arena ready ballads ("Hero", "Always Be My Baby"), great covers ("Without You", "Open Arms", "Against All Odds") and generally, a soul vibe in each album that reflect her commitment to her art. All of this while being married at the music mogul Tommy Mottola. Later, she embarked on a self-discovery journey that involved having LOTS of hits with famous rappers (after all, she set the trend with her 1995 collabo with Ol' Dirty Bastard on, what else? "Fantasy", of course). I think she had worked with them all... well, except Eminem, of course, although the collaboration they had, according to Eminem, was not exactly musical. (Mariah is not amused). Even she did a song with Nicki Minaj, before all the bad blood and eye-rolling and passive agressive commentaries on American Idol, which would be funny if it wasn't so staged. Or at least that's what everybody say. But seriously, she has worked with all the rappers you might think of, mostly the current favorites at that time. And I considered that a bless and a curse, since she has overused that resource and now seems to be only a guest in her own songs. But she's Mariah; she can do whatever she wants and us, fans, can't complain at all, because SHE is in it.

Only one commentary about her gig on American Idol: Aside of my feelings about Nicki Minaj, I thought Mariah would have been so much better on it if she were the only female at that table. And she deserved that, being virtually the resposible for half auditions on that show. On her Wikipedia page, I loved a line that textually says:  "Depending on how you feel about public humiliation, the best/worst parts of American Idol are the audition shows, which normally break down into three distinct parts:(1) The Talented Kids.(2) The Weird Kids.(3) The Mariahs." That's how far it goes when we're talking about Mariah influence on that shows, but you can see she is not feeling comfortable on that role.

It is hard to say which tunes are my favorite when it comes to Mariah's music, but it's clear that each and every album has some jewels that I cherish and appreciate everytime I listen to them. Whether it is because of the music, the vocals or the lyrics, or if they are attached to a specific situation on my life, her music has always been a great part of me and what I like about pop.

So, to recap and in alphabetical particular order (remember my obsessions with that), here they are: my favorite Mariah Carey tunes (I even made ringtones of them, how's that for a fanatic??):

"Boy (I Need You)" featuring Cam'ron - One of the greatest examples on how Mariah can mix hip hop and a rapper to her favor. Besides, that sample of "I'm Going Down" by Rose Royce and the "Boy, Oh Boy" snippets repeated ad nauseam give that song a charming feeling, indeed.



"Breakdown" featuring Bone Thugs-n-Harmony - Lyrics here are quintessential Mariah. Besides, this is a fine R&B song with hip hop verses about losing love, something we all can relate to. Video is also amazing.



"Did I Do That?" featuring Mystikal - One of those gems from the "Rainbow" album, which itself is very consistent. In this one, she's lamenting for a mistake dating a man who is clearly not suited for her. Wait a minute - this could be easily targeted at Eminem in a beat. So Mariah predicts the future, too!



"Didn't Mean to Turn You On" - For me, "Glitter" is a really superb album. It's a departure of what Mariah had done prior to that, and although the movie is not great and she uses so many guests on the album, the music was so unjustifiably categorized at the same level as the movie did, which is totally a no- no. And this song, a cover of a 1984 Cherelle song, it's basically an ode to one of those times you send the wrong signals to someone (inadvertantly or on purpose), only to left them aroused and in need of a cold bath. Fun(k) song, very Prince-y.



"Dreamlover" - Even though I consider this a schmaltzy syrupy song, I really adore it. It's so basic, you have to care for it. Testament of the simpler times that the 90's were. :(



"Fantasy" - There are songs that are so indelibly attached to one artist, that you cannot conceive their careers without them. And I think this is the song for Mariah. A global success and one of the few songs to debut at the top of the Billboard chart, when that meant something. And that sample of Tom Tom Club, "Genius of Love", was simply amazing! This was the 90's for me, essentially. And it's nice to get back to those days; with this song that is possible.



"H.A.T.E.U." - The last album of Mimi, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel", is not easily one of my favorite albums from her, but this song reminded me why I fall in love with this girl in the first place. Harmony, melisma, lyrics, is all there.



"Honey" - This was the Mariah 'coming of age' song. Maturity and a new sound came along, and of course a little sexiness, why not? It's like a divorce and a new found freedom brings the best of her. And of course, the infectious chorus with the always syrupy lyrics really made one of those songs that are so recognizable. Props to her, to get to a new level that many of her fans were waiting for a long time.



"I'm That Chick" - Personally, I prefer Mariah's uptempo numbers, because she is so much fun in them. In this song, out of the E=MC2 album (a name that is so nerdy many people wondered if Mariah knew really what it meant), she proves that she's not strange to rhythmic songs and she can make a step or two on the dance floor. Obviously, with a little help of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, sampling "Off The Wall", his best era, this is foolproof. I wish this would have been a single, with a proper video and all, but hey! We get an Offer Nissim remix, so that counts, right?





"Shake It Off" - This was taken by that force of nature that was her "The Emancipation of Mimi" album. A song so fun for me, and with a rhyming and pace that I just enjoy thoroughly. The only person that could avoid this jewel to hit number one was... well, herself. Amazing.



"Someday" - A fun song from the first album, "Mariah Carey", that was number one and confirmed us that Mariah also like to have fun.



"Sweetheart" - Back in the day, circa 1998, this woman touched everything and turned into gold. So it came to no surprise that she decided to throw a Greatest Hits album consisting in all of her "#1's". Seriously, she had so many. But also with some new songs, being the primary single this one. So infectious and continuing the tradition of one word, corny titles, that it had proved to be so efficient.



"We Belong Together" - Jermaine Dupri is half-responsible for this comeback single that put Mariah on the stars again after the disaster that was "Glitter", both album and movie, and the so-so performance of "Charmbracelet", a good album with a bad timing. And oh boy, that was some comeback. This song represents something important to me. Having my first real breakup with one person I cared about, this song became my oficial anthem of the heart-broken. I literally cried whenever I heard it. And although now I laugh at that possibility (crying for that person, WTF was wrong with me?), the song still gives me the chills and more. So powerful. 14 no-consecutives weeks on number one and being named "Song of the Decade" by Billboard gotta mean something, am I correct?



"Without You" - Now, this is officially the first song I heard from her, back in the day, and positively I can say that I haven't looked back ever since. A cover from the group Badfinger, with a formulaic treatment and yet Mariah delivered some of her finest notes in here. Superb.




To rest my case: Mariah is a super talented woman, that has been highly criticized for a style that would seem easy to accomplish and maintain, but definitely she's a trendsetter, a woman that has had their troubles and failures like everyone else, but remains as a strong female and a reference on pop music, whether you like it or not.

I wanna Scream & Shout... for this song to go away!!

According to an article on the always reliable BBC, some music is meant to get stuck in your head no matter how you cope with it. That's fine: there are thousands of songs out there meant to be that way (like The Harlem Shake and some other stuff) and I suppose many people can find that very amusing. Unless, of course, that song is so hideous you just want to get it out of your brain by any means possible.

That would explain my animosity towards this effing song I just can't get out of my head...



Don't get me wrong: I love both Britney and Will.I.Am. As a pop craver, I should do. But basically, all their conjoined efforts seem to produce such distasteful music that I think they ought to stop these collaborations and make better music. On their own, of course.

I don't know what it is about this song. Maybe it's the repetitiveness of it, the lyrics oh so basic, Britney sounding nothing like her, awful video... I could go on and on. And yet, I find myself humming and chanting the chorus on my way to work, or when I get a bath, or when I'm listening to much better music.

Then, we got the remix of the frigging thing, because why not? Of course, it's ten thousand times worse than the original, if that's possible.

But hey, that video and song had reached number 3 on Billboard, have million of views on You Tube and made headlines on such themes as lip-synching (seriously?), so what do I know??

I just wanted to scream and shout, and let it all out... see? I did it again.

Damn song.

One degree of separation: Cheryl, Ciara &... Lana??

So, Cheryl (of Girls Aloud, former Ashley Cole wife and former X-Factor judge fame) has a new song, that I'm obsessed with: "Ghetto Baby".



She looks classy and beautiful in this video, and certainly ghetto at the same time, and for some reason she reminded me to another artist, who she has nothing to do apparently (although I find out they have the same taste in men, as evidenced by the fact Ciara dated 50 Cent and Cheryl's boo is the male dancer she's gropping in the 'Ghetto...' video):



So I'm not saying these songs are identical in any sense, but the theme and dances in them looked so similar. Ciara is more like an urban motif, stylish and boyish at the same time (in reference to the song, of couse), whereas Cheryl's has more of a soft, contemporary look on it.

But I guess you don't know at first who wrote Cheryl's song, do you? Any guess?



Nope, at first I didn't see that relation neither. And here we are: Lana Del Rey composed this song. I'm not sure if it was meant to be for Cheryl all the way, although I'm sure is far away of the sound both artists are known for, and I guess Ciara will be more fitted to the style and theme of the song. And I have to say, Cheryl sounds more Lana-ish on that song that Lana herself, which is quite something.

Then again, Lana's album is full of surprises. I just recently heard her "Born to Die" album and Ghetto Baby made sense after all. Lana's style has been accused to be too pop for indie, but I guess there's something undeniably charming about her. Some people say her 15 minutes are up, but I think we will be definitely hearing more from her. If not for her music, which is totally amazing, she's like a fashion icon, bringing back the glamour of the 40's and 50's, in a very David Lynch kind of thing.

Although many people will remember her for her stranded and awkward presentation at Saturday Night Live, which, in all honesty, started bad but were getting interesting as Lana was feeling more in control on the stage. At least she was not lip synching, like other people used to do, which is something we have to be grateful for.

But again, who in their right mind have thought these three artists, so different in their backgrounds and sounds, will have something in common (at least in my mind, of course)? Anyone?

I guess that was just me, then.

Let's do the "Harlem Shake"... Or not, whatever!

It was inevitable... Let's talk about the No. 1 song on the US, according to Billboard.



"Harlem Shake" is the new sensation on the Internet. It is literally everywhere. This song and its story is so unbelievable and viral, that even the Simpsons have created their own version. But what is exactly the appeal of this song?



I don't know, exactly. As a fan of electronica, hip hop and pop, and of course all things popular, I should be an easy target for this song. As I definitely was with "Gangnam Style" (remember? The sensation of last year? Never mind), which I definitely think is a great song, despite its origin and viral success, and of course, the silly dance. But this?



Don't get me wrong. I think the memes are great fun. The concept is a novelty too: A group of people hanging out, unaware that there's a dancer in the room dancing crazily and nonsensically, and after the musical bridge, everything erupts, and we watch them all go nuts. Basically, anyone can do their own version of Harlem Shake. Even the guys at the Company I work did it. And it's hilarious. But this song  No. 1?? I mean, not even "Gangnam Style" did that, and I thought it was well deserved. At least, that song was meant to be an irony of the lifestyle of the rich and famous of South Korea. But I don't think the message is too profound in this one.



But what do I know? I mean, song is a success, viral videos of the dance are spreading like cockroaches infesting You Tube, and all is fine and great. And I guess I should make amends with it, and not take seriously this crazy trend, and have fun and maybe create my own Harlem Shake. Will you care to join me? Or not, whatever...

And finally, the animal edition of the Harlem Shake! I'm at peace now.

A funky oddissey on Monterrey... Jamiroquai!

For the people that read me on my Twitter, it is pretty obvious that I'm a concert lover. And although this year I'm not planning to go to many concerts like I did in recent years (unless they're for free, of course), I just started this year with one of my fave bands of the 90's: Jamiroquai. And let me tell you, what a perfect start!



For me, a fine 90's breed, this band summarizes everything that I loved back on those days. The first I heard from them was that awesome song and video "Virtual Insanity", a signature song from this group and a clear omission on the concert. However, since the first moment they got on stage, the magic was there and we got the chance to be transported back to that era where the alternative and popular collided, and many groups that were a fussion of many influences and genres came to life, Jamiroquai being one of the finest examples of this kind.



But one thing is for sure: the charismatic leader of the band, Jay Kay, has no longer the energy and the moves that were his trademark on videos like that of "Virtual..." or "Canned Heat". Which is not a bad thing, I mean, he's 40 and all, but in order to maintain the illusion, it would have been nice to watch them perform all his dance steps and acrobacies.



Another thing of this concert was how long were the performances of each song. Evidently, many hits were left behind, favoriting longer versions of such hits and songs that, according to this site, weren't performed prior to this tour. All in all, it was a great decision, and certainly the band has great musicians that put a nice and special touch in every song.



Definitely I was looking forward to this concert and I'm not disappointed by the result. And of course, that only can mean I'm obsessed with their music once again, so sue me if I reference it later on another posts I will make in the future.

And once again, please take a tour on my You Tube page, where I decidedly will put every single concert I will go for the rest of my life, only for your viewing pleasure. That's me, all giving spirit. Ha!

Why Gotye should have won Song of The Year on The Grammy's (even if he wasn't nominated...)

On a prior post I talked about Grammy's night and how it represented an important event for all people like me, who loves music and popular culture all rolled into one pretty package. And certainly, it was one hell of a night, in a good way, of course. Maybe not all of the winners were right (in these awards, they never are, actually) and maybe not all the performances were spot-on (talking to you, Carrie Underwood & Frank Ocean), the night was delightful and there were moments so glorious. But I will let anyone to decide which ones made the cut.

Right now, I’m going to ramble about an omission so obvious, I actually thought was some kind of sick joke: my favorite song of 2012, the omnipresent “Somebody That I Used To Know” (and I’m not being hyperbolic here, it was literally everywhere) NOT nominated as “Song of The Year”. Like, WTF?? Yeah, the song penned as THE song of 2012 (aside of the annoying “Call Me Maybe” which in fact was nominated) and one of the best-selling digital singles of all times. You may say: “that doesn’t mean this song is actually good”, but you know what? IT IS!!

But like I said, these awards are not known for recognizing deserving people of the work they are nominated –or win - for (looking at you, Milli Vanilli). And apparently, for the Grammy people, those were not enough reasons to even nominate the damn song for said award. So despite that, and the fact that it’s not possible to went back in time and change a thing, I’m going to list __ reasons why, if nominated, “Somebody…” would’ve been easily “Song of The Year”, in no particular order:

 
1. The lyrics. For some reason, this is the kind of song that goes directly into our systems because we can all relate to it in some level. Who among us has suffered heartbreak and a rupture so bad that you shut the person completely off of our lives and pretend they don’t even exist? Or had an encounter with your ex and decide to give him or her cold shoulder, just for the sake of it? And all those feelings are well reflected in all 4:05 minutes that the song lasts. My favorite line? “You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness…”. I knew that feeling, :(

2. The video. OK; I know at first could be gross looking at Gotye’s ugly feet, but you can’t deny it is so simple and yet beautiful. I was reading the other day that you can juxtapose the video with the feelings depicted in it; for instance, Gotye symbolizes the beginning and foundation of the relationship (thus all the coloring and painting over him), and beautiful and talented Kimbra was the downfall and termination, her being unpainted and nude at the end. Well, that’s what I thought I read, but it makes a nice analogy, don’t you think?


3. The fact that this song has been covered by so many artists and that Kelly Clarkson actually heard about it and covered on one of her tours (I cannot imagine a world where she hasn’t heard of Miguel, but I guess that’s material for another post).

4. Even Prince love this song... I mean, coming from him, that's got to be one of the best compliments someone can give it to you, right? I mean, that's just... awesome, to say the least.

5. This song evidently is a one hit wonder... Maybe not the last time we heard about Gotye, but I'm not positive he is going to reach higher levels tan those he achieved with this song... Hopefully I'm wrong, but this is a testament of the power of a great song, and the legacy he's handing to the world. And for that I respect him.

And that, my friends, is all I have to say about this exquisite song. For me, one of the greatest songs of this decade, at least. How about you? Do you feel the same way about it, or is it just me that goes nuts for it? Sound off on the comments!

On why am I switching to English mode

When I decided to create a blog I wanted to make sure this was a project I was so interested about. I decided to create it in Spanish, being my mother language and all. But for a long time, I was wondering if I was comfortable talking about American and English music, movies et al, in Spanish and I came to the conclusión: "There's no way this came out and be good!"

Don't get me wrong. I love Spanish. I think is one of the most precious languages in the world. And I'm very glad to have it as my mother language. But for the purposes of this sole blog, and the matter of reaching a wider audience to it, I think I'm gonna stick to English.

Hope you like the change and join me in this adventure. I'm gonna try to post it more often and I guarantee you it's gonna be amazing! Well, not sure about that, but I will do my best! :)

Cómo nos afecta la muerte de un artista...

Hola a todos. Estamos de nuevo aquí y aunque este espacio es puramente pop, dedicaré un post a la memoria de todos aquellos artistas que han muerto en circunstancias extrañas y dolorosas.

Obviamente, esto viene a colación por la muerte de la cantante Jenni Rivera, que obviamente todos conocíamos por su trabajo en La Voz México. En el remoto caso de que no la conocieran, ella era una cantante de música de banda y norteña, muy popular en donde yo vivo (Monterrey). Después de un concierto que tuvo el día sábado, abordó su avioneta con un grupo de 6 personas. Su avión desapareció, y más tarde se supo que se había desplomado, matando a todos los tripulantes. Hasta el día de hoy se conocen las causas oficiales del accidente, y se manejan muchas teorías, pero lo cierto es que no hay certeza de lo que pudo haber pasado, y temo que nunca se sepa.

Como es costumbre hoy en día, todos nos enteramos de la noticia por Twitter; incluso, circulan fotos de la que aparentemente es la última foto tuiteada por un miembro de su equipo, poco antes del despegue.

Definitivamente es una triste noticia, independientemente de que seamos sus fans o no. La mujer tuvo una vida llena de escándalos y ciertamente no era una santa, pero no es tema que nos ocupa, sino el legado musical que dejó. Para los fans del género, ha dejado una huella imborrable que será muy difícil de llenar (palabras textuales de varios conocidos que, de hecho, asistieron al concierto en Monterrey).

Y aquí viene lo interesante de este asunto: ¿hasta qué punto nos afecta la muerte de un artista, y más si éramos verdaderos seguidores del mismo?

Recuerdo hace ya 11 años de la muerte de Aaliyah, cantante estadounidense que también falleció en un avionazo. Mi amigo René me mandó un mensaje para avisarme de su muerte, lo cual me impactó profundamente. Ella era muy joven, apenas 22 años, y su muerte fue una de las más dolorosas de la época, por las implicaciones que tenía para una artista que apenas estaba estableciéndose y ganando notoriedad.

Igual de trágica, aunque en circunstancias muy diferentes, fue la muerte de Michael Jackson, una muerte por demás inesperada, amén de que él se presentaría en una serie de conciertos en Londres que marcarían su despido de los escenarios. Una de las muertes más dolorosas del pop, también me enteré por medio de un SMS, y debo decir que sí me afectó profundamente, pues soy admirador de su música y lo considero uno de los más grandes genios del pop. El Rey, sin duda alguna.

 

Pero sin duda, la muerte que más me ha afectado a un nivel incluso personal ha sido la de la diva del pop y R&B, Whitney Houston. Lo de ella, aunque se veía venir debido a sus problemas con drogas y alcohol, fue como un golpe en la boca del estómago para millones como yo, que siempre disfrutamos su música y adoramos todo lo que hacía. Una estrella que poco a poco iba apagándose, hasta que explotó y desapareció. Sin embargo, es innegable que su legado seguirá en su música y en todo lo que nos dio en su maravillosa época.

 

 





 Es triste saber que todos estos artistas se han ido, pero su legado sigue y eso es lo importante. Sin embargo, es justo decir que, aunque ninguna de sus vidas fue perfecta o un modelo a seguir, merecen todo el respeto como seres humanos. Por eso, ver todos los comentarios que veía acerca de la muerte de Jenni en específico, fueron difíciles de leer. La gente puede ser cruel a veces, o la mayoría del tiempo. No quiero parecer cursi, pero sí quiero puntualizar que creo que todo en esta vida se regresa, lo bueno y lo malo. Y hay que pensar que esta gente tiene familia, hijos, padres, abuelos, etc. Los cuales resultan dañados por los comentarios tan mezquinos y ruines que hacemos. Claro que hay tiempo para todo, y hacer burla de alguien no tiene nada de malo. Pero hay momentos y lugares, y creo que éste no es el mejor momento para ello.

Tampoco se trata de ensalzar a la gente porque sí. Se trata de reconocer los logros y lo que obtuvieron en vida, y celebrarlo. No tiene caso centrarse en lo negativo; eso no va a cambiar. Pero sí enfocarse en las cosas positivas que dejaron las personas.

Ciertamente, la muerte de estos artistas nos afecta, como si fueran parte de nuestra familia. Por ello, más que nunca, creo que debemos celebrar la vida; saber que estamos sólo de paso, y que debemos hacer de nuestra vida algo que los demás recuerden con cariño y agradecimiento. Creo que al final del día, ése es el mayor legado que estos artistas han dejado con su música.

Que descansen en paz.

New Music: Kimbra, "Vows"

Lo prometido es deuda, y ahora vamos a hablar de un disco que me viene obsesionando desde hace ya varios meses. No es nuevo, pero estoy seguro que les va a encantar.

Seguro que ya conocen a Kimbra. Ella es la cantante que acompaña al ahora sí oficialmente "One-Hit Wonder" Gotye, en su multisonado y bien merecido éxito "Somebody That I Used To Know", una canción que me fascina y que a pesar de estar choteadísima es un clásico instantáneo. La canción es buena, pero esta cantante nativa de Nueva Zelandia le imprime cierto misticismo y una dimensión diferente a una canción que bien pudo haber quedado como un reproche por parte de un amante desencantado. Ella es así de buena.



La primera vez que escuché de ella, sin embargo, no fue por esta canción. Fue su primer sencillo, "Settle Down", el cual escuché a través de la página de Perez Hilton, ¿quién diría? Esta canción, tan hipnótica y desconcertante, así como su peculiar estilo de canto y baile me encantaron, aunque ya después no hice mucho esfuerzo por buscar algo más de ella.



Por cierto, vean los videos y díganme si no luce diferente entre uno y otro... Hasta pensé que no era ella, o que se había hecho cirugía!

Después viene el éxito con "Somebody..." y Kimbra empieza a sonar con este disco, que la verdad, me fascinó. Aunque yo soy el más pop del pop de vez en cuando me atrapan sonidos diferentes, y en este caso la combinación irresistible de una excelente voz, aunado a música difícil de clasificar ya que tiene muchas influencias de pop, jazz, soul, R&B, y hacen de este disco una escucha obligada para todos los que disfrutan la buena música y quieren algo un poco diferente a la oferta pop que se escucha hoy en día por todos lados.



En ocasiones, hasta me recuerda  una Björk en su etapa "Post", una de sus mejores épocas, y es que ella no se conforma con una melodía simple sino que va más allá, y su forma de cantar tan peculiar la hace diferente y atractiva al resto de las propuestas que se escuchan hoy en día.

Si ya están un poco cansados de las mismas propuestas pop de siempre, denle oportunidad a este disco, y de seguro les va a encantar... Kimbra es una artista que habrá que seguir de cerca, ya que aún tiene mucho que dar.

Madonna en concierto: 24 de Noviembre de 2012. Un fin de semana que no olvidaré!!

Primero que todo, una disculpa muy grande!! Acabo de darme cuenta que han sido ¡3 meses! sin escribir en mi blog, y eso no es bueno. Éste es un proyecto muy interesante que me permite hablar de algo que me apasiona -la música-, por lo que ahora sí, hago la promesa de no dejar pasar tanto tiempo entre uno y otro post.

Y bueno, considerando lo anterior, creo que la mejor manera de regresar al buen redil es hablando del que para mí fue el evento del año. Creo que ya se lo imaginan: el concierto de Madonna en la ciudad de México, el pasado 24 de Noviembre, en el Foro Sol.



Wow, wow, wow!! Ésa es la única palabra que encuentro para describir la emoción que significó para mí ir por PRIMERA vez a un concierto de la REINA DEL POP, ni más ni menos. Y es que después de haber ido ya a conciertos de otras divas del pop (Christina, Britney y mi favorita personal Kylie, entre otras), era obligado que fuera al concierto de esta mujer que, a pesar de su edad, o quizá por eso, sigue siendo tan activa y fresca como el primer día que salió con su sencillo "Everybody", hace ya ¡30 años! Bueno, no digo nada, porque ésos son los años que tengo, ¡ja!



Más de 55,000 personas (según cifras oficiales) se reunieron en este recinto que, insisto, no es el mejor para conciertos de esta naturaleza. Sin embargo, el ánimo no decayó nunca, y desde el principio el ambiente estaba puesto para disfrutar esta fiesta gay (sí, hay que decirlo, más del 90 % de los asistentes lo son), con la participación de un Paul Oakenfold que si bien ya no se encuentra en su mejor momento, hizo vibrar a la gente con su ritmo y mezclas, dejando el ambiente calientito para la llegada de nuestra Majestad o "Madgesty", como la han nombrado sus fans en US.



Con una producción que afortunadamente era mucho mejor que la que ha llevado a países como Francia, empezó el show con la participación del trío Kalakan, de quien no sabía mucho hasta antes de este concierto y que le dieron un toque especial. La escenografía recordaba un templo con un estilo entre gótico y bizantino, y de ahí a los primeros acordes de "Girl Gone Wild", donde por fin apareció la reina para ofrecernos a todos sus súbditos un espectáculo al nivel de los mejores del mundo. Tenía que ser: después de todo, ella es la máxima trend-setter y lo que haga ella se replicará por sus seguidores y en todo el mundo.



No hubo concesiones, para nada ni para nadie. Desde el vertiginoso inicio con "Girl Gone Wild", seguido de "Revolver" y una de mis favoritas personales, "Gang Bang", Madonna hizo una alegoría sobre la violencia que se vive hoy en día en los medios, en la calle y en el mundo en general. Tema que, por supuesto, no nos es nada ajeno. Mucho se criticó el uso de armas en esta gira; incluso gente en México opinó su falta de respeto hacia la situación que se vive en el país. A lo cual contesto: "Fuck Off!" Es un show: una representación de lo que pasa en la realidad, y como tal debe tomarse.



Un acierto de esta gira ha sido el de incluir canciones ya antiguas como "Open Your Heart" y combinarla con grandes canciones contemporáneas como "Hung Up", todo lo cual se cuenta a través de excelentes y elaboradas coreografías que harían palidecer a alguien de menor edad (te veo a ti, Britney). Es increíble la energía que esta mujer tiene a sus 54 años. Y aún así hay gente que se atreve a decir que es una viejita!! Por favor!! Ya quisiéramos llegar todos a esa edad teniendo el cuerpazo, las ganas y el dinero que esta mujer tiene. Pero sobre todo, la inteligencia para perdurar a través de los años y seguir tan rabiosamente frescos como el primer día, sin menoscabo de nuestra forma de ser. Eso es lo que más admiro de ella.



Y sólo un artista como ella tiene la capacidad de reírse de sí misma, y llevarse de encuentro a los demás. Otro de los highlights del show (siendo el show completo un highlight en su carrera) fue cuando interpretó su himno a la revolución femenina "Express Yourself", para seguir con "Born This Way" de Lady Gaga (quien es su mayor admiradora aunque lo niegue), y rematarlo con el coro de "She's Not Me". Madonna, siendo irónica, da cachetada con guante blanco a ella y a sus detractores, haciéndoles saber que cualquier cosa que se haga en el pop femenino, de seguro ella ya lo hizo y se le tiene que respetar por ello.



Uno de los puntos más comentados en la noche fue lo abierta, eufórica y expresiva que andaba Madonna. Todos puntualizamos que al menos, se había tomado unos tequilitas antes del concierto. Y es que, honestamente, se le veía feliz. Quizá se contagió con la euforia y algarabía de todos nosotros; quizá le emocionó ver a más de 55,000 personas corear todas y cada una de sus canciones, hasta las de su nuevo disco. O quizá es que Madonna es feliz haciendo lo que hace, y lo transmite en cada una de sus presentaciones. Al verla cantando canciones como "Masterpiece", ganadora del Globo de Oro y causa de una acre rivalidad con Sir Elton John, uno no deja de admirar su capacidad interpretativa. Y ése es otro punto: yo era uno de los escépticos que dudaba de sus capacidades vocales e interpretativas en el escenario. Afortunadamente, y como tantas otras veces, su Majestad nos calló la boca a muchos y demostró que, aunque técnicamente no es la mejor cantante, aún tiene mucho que ofrecer en ese departamento, y es más que capaz al llevar un concierto de poco más de dos horas sin denotar cansancio en su voz, ni desafinar en partes importantes. Y eso se agradece.



Otra parte importante del show fue la de "Masculine/Femenine", donde interpretó sus canciones más reconocidas: "Vogue", sin duda LA canción de Madonna y por la cual es el icono que es hoy en día; "Candy Shop-Erotica", en un mash-up delicioso y sumamente sensual; mi favorita por mucho, "Human Nature", otro "Fuck you" a la sociedad y su doble estándar (a mí me gustó la forma en que manejó los espejos e hizo oda al video con el juego de manos que la rodeaban); "Like a Virgin", en una versión stripped off que recordó a la época vodevil de los 40's y 50's (cabe mencionar que en esta parte era tanto el frío que se sentía, que tuvo que ponerse un abrigo de pieles, por supuesto; la canción tenía que cantarse con ella semidesnuda y en la espalda un tatuaje que rezaba "Eve"); y "Love Spent", la cual casualmente habla de una relación en la que ella es la proveedora y le menciona a su hombre si está con ella por su dinero, y en la cual casualmente bailó con su ahora pareja, el bailarín Brahim Zaibat. Coincidencia? No lo creo, ella es demasiado inteligente para ello.



Sin duda, Madonna se reinventa a sí misma y por ello no debe extrañarnos su permanencia en el mundo de la música. Temas como "I'm Addicted", "I'm a Sinner", muestran que ella es una mujer que sabe estar a la vanguardia en las tendencias de la moda y la música. Obvio que algunas de sus ideas ya han sido probadas por otros artistas menos conocidos, pero el mérito que ella tiene es que las pone en el mainstream y así las lleva a un público que de otra forma las ignoraría o no las entendería. Siento que, a pesar de todo lo que se diga o se hable de ella, ella ya tiene un lugar asegurado en la historia de la música, y será difícil que alguien pueda llegas a tener los mismos logros que ella, considerando que muchos artistas de la mitad de su edad ya han gastado sus mejores cartuchos y al parecer ya no tienen mucho que ofrecer, más que controversia y cero contenido o sustancia (no hablo de nadie en particular, es una tendencia que se está dando mucho actualmente).



Lo más coreado de la noche? Sin duda "Like a Prayer", que con su coro góspel y ensamble similar al del video de finales de los 80's, nos recordó el por qué esta mujer está en el lugar que ahora ocupa. Sin duda, esta mujer tiene un verdadero balance entre lo nuevo y lo viejo. La verdad, qué difícil escoger qué canciones cantará en cada uno de sus conciertos. Tiene un catálogo para mínimo unos 10 conciertos, incluyendo su música nueva. Y no es exageración; para todos los que la adoramos y nos sabemos todas sus canciones, un concierto como éste, con todo y su parafernalia, nos deja con ganas de más, por lo que esperamos próximamente el nuevo disco y el nuevo tour, seguros de que nos deparará tantas o más sorpresas de las que éste nos dio.



En un concierto en el que hasta su hijo Rocco participó, no cabe duda que Madonna dio lo mejor de sí misma y se entregó a su público. Hubo gente a la que obviamente no le gustó; no sé qué clase de conciertos buscarán estos "conocedores", ya que éste sin duda es de los de mejor manufactura y clase a nivel mundial. Aún y si Madonna no fuera de nuestro agrado, habrá que reconocer el esfuerzo y empeño conque ella se preocupa en brindar un show de calidad y sobre todo, derrochando talento y energía en cada una de sus participaciones. Eso, señores, es lo que hace una verdadera y talentosa artista. El cierre con broche de oro lo dio el mash-up de "Celebration-Give it 2 Me", y no pudo haber un mejor final para una excelente velada.

Por supuesto, les pido acceder a mi página de You Tube para que revisen todos los videos que un servidor grabó en el concierto (que fue prácticamente todo el concierto) y disfruten de esta mujer que, como los buenos vinos, se conserva y cada día agarra más sabor, diga lo que diga la envidiosa gente que no soporta que una mujer de su edad tenga mejor cuerpo y actitud que ellos (ja!).

Y agradecer a mis amigos René, Samuel y Adrián, por compartir esta experiencia conmigo. No hubiera sido lo mismo sin ustedes, hermanos. Un abrazo y espero que lo hayan disfrutado tanto como yo. Seguro que así fue.

Keane en concierto!!

Hola a todos!! Primero, una disculpa por no haber actualizado mi blog en tanto tiempo. Prometo que ya no lo dejaré tanto tiempo. Hay tantas cosas de qué platicar... Por lo pronto, y para terminar este domingo rico y empezar la semana con toda la energía, les dejo estos videos que acabo de subir a mi cuenta de You Tube para que los disfruten, de este gran grupo inglés que es uno de mis favoritos: Keane, a quien tuve la oportunidad de ver en la Arena Monterrey el pasado 29 de Agosto. Y qué decir del concierto? Fue excelente!!



Esta banda realmente es una de las mejores de su género, y a mí en lo personal me trae excelentes recuerdos de una de las mejores épocas de mi vida. Suena nostálgico, lo sé, pero ésa es la vibra que tiene esta banda y que me gusta mucho. Ya tenía ganas de verlos, y pues se me dio la oportunidad. Y fue maravilloso.



Si hay una crítica que hacer al concierto, es que tuvo realmente muy poca parafernalia. Fue sólo un discreto juego de luces y un figurín con el título del último disco de la bnda, "Strangeland", pero sólo eso basto. La verdad, mis respetos, ya que prendieron al público como hace mucho no lo veía en una banda.



Espero los disfruten. Hay verdaderos clásicos en esta banda que valen la pena, y espero se animen a escucharlos si aún no lo han hecho.

App de la Semana: Who Sampled

Hola a todos! Una disculpa por la falta de actualizaciones, espero poder actualizar más seguido. Pero la verdad he tenido mucho trabajo... La excusa de siempre, jajaja!

Hoy voy a platicar para los que tenemos la suerte de tener un iPhone o iPod Touch, y es una aplicación que en lo personal me gusta mucho, y se llama WhoSampled. Esta aplicación nos permite saber cuáles son las "raíces de la música" que escuchamos, y la verdad es muy interesante, ya que como alguien dijo, "no hay nada nuevo bajo el sol", y toda la música que oímos hoy en día en su mayoría está reciclada de música de otras épocas.

La aplicación es muy buena, y te da opciones de buscar por artista, canción o álbum, dependiendo de la información que tengas. También te permite acceder a las canciones que tienes en tu librería de iPhone o iPod, así que puedes saber de dónde vienen las raíces de tu canción preferida.

Te permite saber si la canción ha sido sampleada, quién la ha sampleado y si tiene remixes o es un cover, además de que te da links de You Tube o Daily Motion para que escuches la canción original y de qué partes fue sampleada.

Si no tienes iPhone, no importa. También existe la página (ya puse el link casi al principio de este post) para que te diviertas buscando y descubriendo "nueva" música, con sabor a viejo y bueno.

Y descubres muchas cosas, como por ejemplo: sabían que la canción de Ace of Base "Don't Turn Around" es en realidad un cover de Tina Turner?? Porque yo no lo sabía.

Y a pesar de todo, aún existe gente buena...

En un principio dije que no hablaría mucho de cosas personales, pero esto merece ser contado.

El día de hoy tomé el transporte público para regresar a mi casa (ni modo, aún no tengo carro). Iba yo muy alegre y feliz,utilizando dos asientos (uno para mí y otro para mis cosas, gracias), cuando dormité un poco. Desperté casi al llegar a mi destino, y agarré todas mis cosas y bajé del camión.

Cual no sería mi sorpresa al darme cuenta que no traía mi cartera. ¡Dios! Fue un momento horrible. Me acababa de comprar mi Aluma Wallet (parece que lo único que veo en TV son infomerciales), traía todas mis tarjetas y documentos, y no supe qué hacer. Tomé un taxi para perseguir al camión, pero se fue por otro lado. Un lío. Hablé para cancelar la tarjeta, y...

En eso, veo que tengo un buzón de voz de un número desconocido. Marco para ver quién es, y un ángel (no puedo llamarlo de otra manera) me dice: "¿Usted es fulanito de tal?" "Sí, soy yo, ¿en qué le puedo ayudar?" (muy en mi papel de RH). "Mi esposa encontró su cartera en el camión y queremos devolvérsela".

El señor me dio su dirección y me pidió que pasara por ella cuando pudiera, lo que hice en ese mismo instante. No estaba lejos de mi casa, afortunadamente. La señora me comentó que al ver la cartera pensó que era un estuche de cosméticos (antes de que digan algo, la cartera sí parece un estuche pero puede ser de cualquier cosa, no sólo cosméticos). Ambos señores fueron muy agradables y aunque quise retribuirlos, dijeron que sólo estaban cumpliendo con su deber.

De todo lo malo que está pasando en el país y en el mundo en estos momentos, es reconfortante ver que aún hay personas que se preocupan por el prójimo y que en su pequeño radio hacen lo posible por ayudar a los demás. Yo tuve la suerte de toparme con personas así, y puedo considerarme afortunado. Me regresaron mi cartera intacta, lo cual ya es mucho decir, y les agradezco infinitamente porque me demostraron que, aún a pesar de nuestras circunstancias, aún existe gente buena y responsable en este mundo.

Ojalá todos tuviéramos la misma suerte de encontrar a alguien así, ¿no creen?

New Music: Garbage, "Not Your Kind Of People"

Hola a todos! Esta sección hablará de los nuevos lanzamientos que vaya escuchando y me gusten. No soy crítico de música... bueno, no uno que le paguen, pero espero que mis opiniones les decidan a escucharlos, al menos en Internet. Si son pudientes, pues a comprarlos de iTunes o en su discoteca favorita (¿quién usa esa frase hoy en día? ¡jajaja!)

Garbage ha sido desde sus inicios un grupo importante dentro del rock pop mundial. Recuerdo que la primera canción que escuché de ellos fue Only Happy When It Rains y me gustó por su atmósfera depresiva, al igual que su letra. Pero cuando verdaderamente m atraparon fue con >"Version 2.0" y esas inolvidables canciones, Special y When I Grow Up, y su momento James Bond en The World Is Not Enough.

Sin embargo, el grupo no ha tenido el mismo impacto comercial que tuvo en sus inicios, cosa injusta considerando que "BeautifulGarbage" es su mejor disco hasta ahora en su carrera (para mí, al menos). Lo cierto es que su fórmula noventera a muchos les parece ya desgastada, aunque no me imgino que un virtuoso como Butch Vig, quien fue capaz de cambiar el rumbo de la música con Nirvana y su "Nevermind" del 91, sea capaz de hacer música "de fórmula". Me niego a creerlo.

Y luego, después de una ausencia de más de 6 años, llega "Not Your Kind Of People". Sinceramente, si esperan la reinvención de Garbage como grupo y una nueva era buscan en el lugar equivocado. Garbage no cambiará su forma de hacer música, pero al final del día, a la gente que nos gusta ese grupo nos encanta saber que la banda seguirá refinando su sonido cada vez más sin traicionar sus raíces y ofreciendo canciones de calidad, que aunque no lleguen a ser sencillos, al menos traerán de regreso aquella época tan ideal de nuestras vidas que fue los 90's.

Y no es un disco aburrido, al contrario. Si bien su lado electropop ha quedado relegado a un par de loops en algunas de sus canciones, siguen teniendo esa melodía y ritmo que hicieron un éxito a canciones como Stupid Girl o Vow, hasta Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go). Aquí se encuentran dosificadas, pero sin duda alguna están y hacen que el disco se convierta en un viaje sonoro que nos remonta a las mjores épocas del grupo, con una mejor ejecución y madurez que sólo el tiempo puede brindar.

Aunque debo reconocer que su elección como primer sencillo, Blood For Poppies, no fue la más acertada, el disco merece una oída para todo aquel que recuerda a este grupo como uno de los pilares del rock pop de los noventa. Sin duda será de su agrado y les recordará que estos señores, porque ya son cincuentones, realmente son talentosos y definieron el sonido de una era en la cual muchos de ustedes crecieron.



¿Y qué otra cosa quieren que la maravillosa voz y presencia de Shirley Manson? Una verdadera belleza, con una presencia casi etérea.

Espero poder escucharlos en vivo pronto.

Canciones favoritas: Automatic Systemtic Habit, Big Bright World, I Hate Love, Man On a Wire, The One.

Y así seguiremos otros 6 años...

De confirmarse las tendencias, el partido de los comelonches (lo siento, pero no me rebajaré a poner su nombre en mi blog) "reinará" por 6 años. Lo siento, éste fue un golpe duro para todos. Pero más saber que realmente tenemos el gobierno que merecemos (yo no, pero el 41% del electorado lo confirma). Así que basta de política. No hablaré más de ello. Seré un buen ciudadano y trabajaré duro, para eventualmente buscar otra oportunidad como las que hasta ahora gracias a Dios me han llegado. Y seguiré con este blog, para olvidar un poco que mi país volvió, cual mujer golpeada, al autoritarismo de siempre.

A votar!!

No quiero que este blog se convierta en propaganda política, pero hoy es un día importante para los mexicanos. Hoy se decide quién nos gobernará los próximos 6 años, que serán definitorios para el rumbo que tomará este país. En un ambiente de caos de seguridad, donde reina la incertidumbre, es bueno que como mexicanos ejerzamos el derecho que por ser mexicanos nos corresponde. No importa por quién votemos, o si decidimos anular el voto como una forma de protesta: el caso es votar, que seamos nosotros los que decidamos qué queremos para el país. Ya basta de ser apáticos, de dejar que los demás decidan por nosotros. Es hora de tomar las riendas del futuro de México en nuestras manos. Suena terrorífico, pero es la única forma en que podemos asegurar a las generaciones venideras un México del que se sientan orgullosos.

Y porque puedo, y éste es un blog de música, al fin y al cabo, les dejo con una rola que aunque vieja, resume perfectamente el momento político que estamos viviendo. Molotov y su "Gimme Tha Power".
